THE AIRLINE LAUNCHES THREE NEW ROUTES AND INCRESES FREQUENCY ON NINE EXISTING ROUTES
Wizz Air, Europe’s fastest growing airline, announced today that it will continue the expansion of its operations in Romania, adding a new aircraft to its base in Iasi. The new Airbus A321neo aircraft will join the fleet in December 2022, increasing the number of aircraft in Iasi to four. The fourth modern Airbus A321neo will support operations on three new routes to Memmingen (Germany), Basel-Mulhouse (France), and Copenhagen (Denmark). Together with the new routes, Wizz Air now offers 28 low fare services from Iasi International Airport. Tickets are already available online on wizzair.com and through the mobile app from as low as 24.99 EUR / 119 RON.
With the fourth aircraft at the base and the new routes added to the Romanian network, Wizz Air is the largest airline operating from Iasi, restating its commitment to offering popular destinations and ultra-low fares to as many passengers as possible, in the most sustainable way. Romanians can now travel from Iasi to Memmingen on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, starting December 12th, 2022. Additionally, flights to the EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg and to Copenhagen will both depart from Iasi every Tuesday and Saturday, from December 13th.
Wizz Air continues to expand its operations throughout the network, as it adds more aircraft to the network and recruits more flight attendants. With routes that will take passengers all over Europe, Romanians will be able to travel through these new low-fare Wizz Air services to one of the most important and beautiful destinations in Central and Northern Europe. In addition to these markets, Wizz Air also increases the frequency of numerous flights departing from Iasi. Barcelona, Brussels-Charleroi and Eindhoven will be increased to 3 flights per week. Routes to Paris-Beauvais, Venice-Treviso and Tel-Aviv will be increased to 4 flights per week. The flights to Rome-Ciampino and Billund will have a frequency of 5 flights per week. And the Iasi – London-Luton route will be operated 14 times a week.
The first Wizz Air flight from Romania took off in 2006. Since then, the airline has become the market leader in Romania and has carried over 55 million passengers to and from the country, with over 4.5 million passengers carried in 2022 alone.
Speaking at the press conference in Iasi, Evelin Jeckel, Acting Network Officer at Wizz Air, said: “We are happy to announce our 4th based aircraft in Iasi, the three new routes and frequency increase on nine existing routes. Together with the new addition, Wizz Air now offers 28 routes from Iasi. This marks an important milestone for the Romanian network and confirms our growth strategy and commitment for everyone to enjoy ultra-low fares, travel safe to their desired destination and discover new places, cultures, and people. We can’t wait to welcome our passengers on board!”
Romeo Vatră, General Director of R.A. Iasi Airport, said: "The development plans announced by Wizz Air show that Iasi Airport is still a point of interest for airlines, offering stability, guarantee, trust. Practically, the aircraft that will complete the existing fleet marks a new stage in air transport from Iasi, an investment that will contribute to the diversification of the network of international routes and the expansion of operations. We are very happy with this new step in strengthening the partnership with Wizz Air, the company with the largest number of routes open at Iasi Airport. The discussions I had with the operator regarding the expansion of the base and the permanentizing of some destinations temporarily relocated to Iași were fruitful, and I want to thank the management of Wizz Air for the opening. I am sure that the communities of Romanians abroad, who will use the new routes to move more easily and more often in the country, will receive this news with joy. More destinations mean diversity and, therefore, increased mobility that ensures the long-term development of the airport. Wizz Air has demonstrated that it is one of the strongest European airlines and that together we can build projects that bring added value to the entire region".
Costel Alexe, President of the Iași County Council, said: "After two difficult years of pandemic, which affected the activity of all airports in the world, this year, we came to best describe the Iași Airport with the word «record». Our airport registered, month after month, record after record in terms of passenger traffic, reaching the threshold of 180,000 passengers in July. It is the credit of the airport team, and I know how hard they worked to revitalize the activity; it is a result of our joint efforts to expand and modernize the airport, but certainly an important role is also played by our partners, the airlines that brought attractive and affordable flights to Iasi, opening new doors to Europe, as is the case of Wizz Air. Iasi Airport has managed to develop a trusting relationship with Wizz Air, which translates today into an open operational base in Iasi, in diversified air routes, in direct connections with European metropolises and capitals and in many other development prospects that the company has in Iasi. We are very determined and dedicated to successfully implement the airport expansion and modernization project to continue developing our partnership with air operators and strengthen the position of the airport as a pillar of regional development".
