Wizz Air introduces web check-in
Wizz Air, the largest low fare – low cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, has launched web check-in. The new service is being initially introduced for flights departing from Budapest and extended gradually to flights from all airports by Spring 2010. The new web check-in service makes travel even more convenient by decreasing and potentially eliminating queuing at check-in.
The web check-in is available at wizzair.com from seven days up to three hours before the scheduled departure time of the flight. The new service does not impact on the rest of the boarding procedure: passengers are requested to present themselves at the boarding gate no later than 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the flight.
“We are delighted to present this service enhancement to our passengers. Online check-in makes the process more convenient and efficient both for the passengers as well as the airline. All passengers have to do is to print their own boarding pass at home and present it directly at the gate or at the check-in desks, if they travel with luggage. We encourage our passengers to benefit from this service as it becomes available at their airport.” – said György Abrán, Chief Commercial Officer of Wizz Air. He expects high conversion rate immediately, as 40% of Wizz Air’s passengers carry only hand luggage.

Wizz Air is outraged by Warsaw Airport plans
Wizz Air is outraged by the fact that PPL (Polish Airport Authorities) will close the Etiuda Terminal and double the charges imposed on airlines currently operating out of Etiuda effectively from April 2009.
PPL has confirmed no plans for re-accommodating the low cost carriers other than proposing the prohibitive charges currently available for operations out of the main terminal of Warsaw Airport.
Wizz Air, the largest low fare - low cost carrier at Warsaw Airport has been operating out of Etiuda Terminal since September 2004 and has made significant investments in setting up and running an operating base that currently employs over 100 local staff. Wizz Air's Warsaw traffic will record 875,000 passengers in 2008, accounting for 15% of the airport’s total traffic.
The overall airline capacity at Warsaw Airport dropped by 14% in November compared to the same month last year, marking the third sharpest decline of Europe’s primary airports. During the same period Wizz Air’s capacity in Warsaw grew 12% or 4,500 seats which was the airport’s largest capacity increase in November.
Wizz Air views the PPL plan as a major jeopardy on the future perspective of civil aviation of Poland's capital and a hostile move against the interest of Poland and the Polish people. Millions of Polish people who currently enjoy the financial benefits of low fares will suffer increased charges or no low fare opportunities at all. Also as a result of the PPL plan hundreds of people will lose their jobs.
József Váradi, Chief executive Officer of Wizz Air said: ‘We are outraged by the irresponsible and one sided decision of PPL to wipe Warsaw out from the map of low cost airlines. Even though the constantly changing management of PPL has been talking about opening Modlin airport for low cost airlines, it was not able to deliver any progress over the past 5 years.” He went on saying: ‘This incompetent decision is only aimed at protecting LOT, the airline which has been wasting hundreds of millions of zlotys of Polish tax payers money on Centralwings. Once it failed, they decided to shut down the low cost terminal to protect the struggling mother company. This goes against the spirit of free market economy and EU antimonopoly regulations.’
Wizz Air publicly requests the revision of the Warsaw Airport plans in the spirit of the interest of the Polish people and the prospect of Polish civil aviation.

Wizz Air selects the V2500 to power 50 A320s in $1.6bn order
Wizz Air, Central and Eastern Europe’s largest low cost airline has placed a follow-on order for the IAE International Aero Engines V2500 to power and support a new fleet of 50 Airbus A320 aircraft. Supported by the V2500SelectSM aftermarket agreement, the new deal has a value at list price of about $1.6 billion.
Wizz Air currently operates 18 IAE-powered aircraft and has on order a further 23 A320s that are already committed to be equipped with the V2500. This follow on order will make Wizz Air the largest European customer for IAE.
József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air, said: “We are committed to buying the latest technology in a cost efficient manner and our decision to purchase the V2500 again is a reflection of that pledge. As the most advanced engine available for the A320, the V2500 enables us to benefit from greater fuel efficiency, and therefore lower overall emissions, which are both vital in today’s operating environment. Along with the comprehensive aftermarket agreement, these benefits help us to manage our costs through greater cost visibility and operational savings."
IAE President & CEO Jon Beatty added: “With the latest SelectOne™ technology, we improve the V2500 fuel burn advantage by another 1%, which translates directly into a corresponding reduction in CO2 emissions. We’ve focused the technology improvements on the most important issues that are affecting our customers today to provide them with a solution. With a fleet the size that Wizz will operate, that translates into significant savings over the engine’s lifetime."
SelectOne™ is the product upgrade element in the V2500Select® program that will reduce fuel burn by 1 per cent, improve time-on-wing by 20 per cent, and demonstrate compliance with the most stringent CAEP/6 NOx standards. It is due to enter into service later this year.
IAE is a multinational aero engine consortium whose shareholders comprise Pratt & Whitney (NYSE: UTX), Rolls-Royce (RR.L.), the Japanese Aero Engines Corporation and MTU Aero Engines. This year it is celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the formation of the company.

Wizz Air announced today that it would operate all of its flights serving Transylvania in Romania from Cluj-Napoca International Airport and would cease flying from Tirgu Mures Airport at the same time. The delivery stream of existing and new orders will result in the Wizz Air fleet having an average age of less than 3 years for the next 10 years promoting high operational efficiency and technical reliability, increased passenger comfort, environmental efficiency and one the lowest seat mile cost in the region.
"Wizz Air has demonstrated its ability for sustainable growth in a competitive environment, where low cost leadership is fundamental to market share growth and to remaining competitive. ELFAA Criticises Dutch Aviation Tax and calls on passengers to sign on-line petition
The European Low Fares Airline Association (ELFAA) strongly criticised plans by the Dutch government to impose a EUR 25 (GBP 17) tax on all air passengers leaving airports in the Netherlands and called on travellers to sign an online
petition against the tax.
Commenting on the proposal John Hanlon, Secretary General of ELFAA said:
"The proposed levy is nothing more than a cheap tax grab on ordinary citizens, be they business travellers, holidaymakers or passengers visiting friends and relatives. If the Dutch government were serious about the environment, they would press for all airlines to deliver the kind of environmental efficiency delivered by the low fares airlines across all sectors of the industry. This cannot be achieved by taxes levied on a per passenger basis and requires a market driven solution, for example, a well designed scheme to include aviation into the EU ETS extending to ALL flights to and from the European Union.

The tax will hurt the Dutch economy in general and the aviation and travel industry in
particular. The consideration being given by the new Government to levy the proposed tax
only on passengers originating in Holland and not those in transit through Holland is
particularly unfair to Dutch passengers and we call on passengers to sign the Dutch
Consumer Association petition at:

Wizz Air introduces charge for all checked-in luggage
Wizz Air said today that it would introduce further measures to speed up the check-in and increase the efficiency of the baggage handling process. Following the airline’s announcement last October to charge if there was more than one checked-in bag, Wizz Air will now charge for each bag. The baggage charge will be 3 euros per bag if paid at the time of the initial booking and 6 euros if paid after it (via call centre or at the airport). Passengers are encouraged to take as few bags as they can to save time and increase efficiency of the check-in process.
The measures will be introduced today and apply to all passengers who book from today for travel after 27 October. All the passengers who booked before and travel after 27 October will not be charged at the airport.
The new policy will not change the current rule that allows only one handbag on board not exceeding 10 kg. The excess baggage charge of 8 euros for each kg over the 20 kg allowance also remains unchanged.
‘We are pursuing our philosophy of charging the passengers according to their needs and we are using this change to keep our airfares down. Passengers who will only travel with carry on luggage will benefit for even lower fares. At the same time less checked-in baggage will further increase the operational efficiency of the airline that will help us to maintain and further improve our on-time performance.’ – said Natasa Kázmér, Head of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs.
